The Pepe restaurant building was originally used as a Post Office and a Post office Saving Bank. It closed as a Post office in the mid to late 80’s. The building was then purchased and was converted into a Bar and Bistro. This was to be the first hospitality business in the building. Since then it has changed hands several times, up until it was called “The Pepe” in 2008. The name “The Pepe” was born from the obvious association with the local Pepe estuary and a popular saying amongst locals, being “Let’s do down to the Pepe”. Today remains our slogan. We are often asked by inquiring tourists what the bird is in the logo. Pepe is proud of its New Zealand heritage, and the Tui bird in the logo represents the local New Zealand birdlife.

According to the Maori language in New Zealand, ‘pepe’ means a baby.

Historically, the Pepe estuary was a place of food gathering for the locals. Keeping the same tradition in mind, The Pepe Café prides itself in being a modern family café. There is something for everyone. The Pepe Café is the only food establishment on the Main Road of Tairua that has views of the estuary. Situated on the main road SH 25, it is a favorite amongst locals due to its friendly service and delicious food. The majority of food ingredients used in the café are sourced fresh or from the local suppliers. Offering four different areas to be seated The Pepe Cafe is a perfect place for large or small gatherings in a private setting. So, if you are a valued local, or a tourist visiting our little paradise, enjoy, and please tell your friends: “Let’s go down to the Pepe!” We look forward to serving you.
